DEALTIME FORMS JOINT VENTURE IN JAPAN
DealTime, the leading world-wide online comparison-shopping service announced the formation of DealTime.com KK in Japan, a joint venture with major funding from Triangle Technologies, JAFCO, CSK, Omron Corporation, Credit Saison Mitsui and NTT Leasing.

 

JAPAN'S IT MARKET REACHED $47.7 BILLION IN 1999
According to IDC Japan, Japan's IT market reached $47.7 billion in 1999, a 3.2% increase from the previous year.

 

MPT PROJECT TRANSMITS DATA TO MOVING VEHICLE AT 500MBPS
The MPT (Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications) conducted an experiment where it successfully transmitted data at 500Mbps over a 36GHz signal to a moving vehicle

JAPAN'S LARGEST CATV OPERATORS TO MERGE
Japan's two largest cable TV operators Jupiter Communications and Titus Communications plan to merge. Jupiter, Japan's largest CATV operator is jointly owned by Sumitomo, AT&T and Telecommunications International. Titus, Japan's second largest CATV operator, is jointly owned by Microsoft, Itochu and Toshiba.

 
INTERNET USERS TO EXCEED 20 MILLION
The Japan Internet Association estimates that the current number of Internet users in Japan is 20.9 million. @nifty is the leading ISP with a 21.5% share, followed by Biglobe (11.8%), ODN (8.0%), So-net (7.5%), and NTT's OCN (6.7%). Access by cable TV accounts for 3.2% of Internet traffic, and this rate expected to jump to 9% within 12 months.
   
COMPUTER MARKET REACHED $167 BILLION IN FY 1999
According to a Nikkei Computer study, Japan's computer market reached an estimated $167 billion in FY 1999, a 4% increase from the previous year. Nikkei Computer also predicts that the market will grow 7% in the next three years.
   
HITACHI CABLE INTRODUCES 10 GBPS OPTICAL TRANCEIVERS
Hitachi Cable claims to have developed the world's first optical transceivers capable of handling 10 gigabits of data per second.
   
JAPAN'S LARGEST ISP BEGINS TESTING ADSL SERVICE

HITACHI TO SET UP DNA ANALYSIS BASE
Hitachi is establishing a DNA analysis base that integrates its own information technology with biotechnology techniques developed in the U.S. Hitachi has installed a high-speed DNA decoding machine and other equipment at a research facility leased from a major drugmaker. The new base will carry out gene analysis to find substances that can be used to develop new drugs.
