Nikkei Business Publications is organizing and Dr. Daniel Isenberg is chairing, the Internet & E-Commerce -- Israel-Japan Exhibition that will take place June 20-21, 2000 in Tokyo, Japan. Internet in Japan is booming and Japanese companies are extremely interested in Internet and especially wireless technology

Wireless handset users - 55 million with a 27% growth rate

    SONY TO ESTABLISH INTERNET BANK
    Sony together with Sakura Bank and J.P. Morgan plans to establish an Internet bank for individual customers. The new bank will not have any branch offices. Instead, all banking activities will be done through the Internet such as transferring funds and accessing other bank services.

    RADLAN SIGNS DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENT WITH PALTEK
    RADLAN of Israel signed a distribution agreement with Paltek whereby Paltek will distribute RADLAN's router software to Japanese communications and networks equipment manufacturers. Triangle Technologies mediated the deal between the two companies. .
     
    HOME PC OWNERSHIP REACHES 41%
    According to a study done by Prudential Insurance of America, family PC ownership in Japan reached 41% in Feb. 2000, an 8% increase from the same month last year. 66% of these families used their home PC for Internet access.5
    ASP MARKET REACHED $6.5 MILLION IN FY99
    According to a study by IDC Japan the Application Service Provider market (ASP) reached $70 million in FY99 and is expected to reach almost $700 million by 2004.
     
    OPTOELECTRONICS MARKET REACHED $59 BILLION IN FY99
    According to Japan's Optoelectric Industry and Technology Development Association (OITDA) the total production optoelectric devices reached $59 billion in FY99, a 14% increase from FY98.There was a sharp increase in the production of printers, copiers and digital cameras.
     
    NTT DOCOMO'S I-MODE REACHES 5 MILLION SUBSCRIBERS
    NTT Mobile Communications (NTT DoCoMo) announced that there are over 5 million subscribers to its I-mode Internet cell phone service. This makes NTT DoCoMo the largest ISP in Japan.
     
    150,00 CATV INTERNET USERS ACCORDING TO THE POSTAL MINISTRY
    The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications announced that the number of CATV Internet access users reached 150,00 as of December 1999, a 100% increase from June 1999.
     

    DDI GROUP'S WAP SERVICE SUBSCRIBERS REACH 1 MILLION
    There are one million subscribers to the DDI Group's WAP based Internet phone service called Ezweb.

    NTT MULTIMEDIA LABS OPERATE FIRST IPV6 IX
    NTT Multimedia Communications Laboratories will operate the world's first commercial Internet exchange for Internet protocol version 6 (IPv6). IPv6 is the next generation Internet protocol that features an expanded 128-bit address space.
       
    DENSO DEVELOPS 3-D MICROSCOPE
    Denso developed a microscope that uses a varifocal lens to provide 3-D images of objects. The system can be used for medical endoscopes, factory automation equipment and other applications.
       
    NEW OPTICAL DISK TO HOLD 1 TERABYTE OF DATA
    Tokyo based Optware will develop a new optical disk which will be able to hold 1 terabyte (128 DVD's) worth of data.

    KYOWA MEDEX TO SELL FAST TB TEST
    Kyowa Medex plans to market a diagnostic kit which will detect the microorganisms that cause tuberculosis and other diseases. The new diagnostic kits can give results within three hours compared to previous kits which gave results in a few weeks.
