    MTI establishes mobile telecommunications VC fund
    MTI, a distributor of mobile phones and mobile computing H/W, is establishing a $47 million VC fund that will invest in mobile telecommunications companies. Investors in MTI include NTT DoCoMo, J-Phone, Tsu-ka Group, DDI, and Astel.

    Study shows impact of E-COMMERCE in japan
    According to a study by the Electronic Commerce Promotion Council of Japan (ECOM) and Anderson Consulting, there was $3.2 billion in B2C transactions in FY 1999 with that real estate and automotive transactions accounting for 52% of the transactions. The study predicts that by 2005 there will be over $63 billion in B2C transactions.
     
    Mobile computer users to triple by 2003
    According to a recent study by the Mobile Computing Promotion Consortium (MCPC) the number of users of mobile computer services, including Internet access, will triple from 17 million in FY 99 to 52 million in FY 2003. The MCPC is made up of 83 cell phone companies, computer S/W developers, and electronics manufacturers.
       
    Semiconductor Manufacturers Invest in System Chips
    Japan’s major semiconductor manufacturers such as NEC, Toshiba and Hitachi will invest more time and capital in the development and manufacturing of system chips. These chips are designed to perform multiple functions by integrating circuit blocks on a single chip.
       
    MTP desires set top boxes standard
    The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) plans to raise the 20% cable penetration rate in Japan by imposing a standard on set-top box manufacturers. The MPT claims that that the low penetration rate is due to the high cost of proprietary set top boxes. It claims that the standard will enable manufacturers to achieve efficiencies of scale and will create competition in the market thus lowering costs.
       
    Matsushita to Procure 100% Online
    Matsushita Electric Group announced that by 2001 it plans to procure 100% of all its materials through the Internet. Matsushita’s annual procurement amounts to almost $19 billion.
     
    EXODUS And NRI TO create Japan's largest data center
    Exodus Japan and Nomura Research Institute (NRI) are developing a major data center which will be Japan’s largest Internet hosting facility and will support Exodus Japan’s growing customer demand for Internet hosting services.
     
    NTT DATA, DDI, Others to deliver content via CATV
    NTT Data, DDI, Toppan Printing, Casio Computer, Funai Electric, Tomen, and City Cable Net plan to establish a content delivery company that will use CATV lines to provide household with services.

    Waseda and Hitachi to develop high-speed Internet search technology
    waseda University, Hitachi and thirty other companies and universities plan to jointly develop a high-speed Internet search technology that is 20X faster than conventional methods. Researchers at Waseda developed technology that uses satellites and land-based networks to link up 30 computers equipped with search S/W.

    Fujitsu to establish an online biotech lab
    Fujitsu will set up an Internet based lab to support biotechnology R&D. The online lab will provide information services for DNA analysis and biotechnology databases.
       
    Jafco and Mitsui to initiate crop gene analysis patent business
    Jafco and Mitsui plan to set up a company which will analyze and patent major crop genes. The patents will be licensed to seed companies and agricultural chemical makers
