ITOCHU plans funds for internet start-ups
Sumitomo
Corp. and Itochu Corp. each plan to create a VC fund. The funds
will target start-ups that provide e-commerce services and Internet
hardware/software developers. Sumitomo is planning a $100 million
fund and Itochu is planning a $50 million fund. |

Marubeni
has obtained exclusive sales rights for Israeli made telecommunications
system that can transmit large amounts of image data via the
Internet. The system developed by the Israeli RT Image can transmit
more than 100 mgbs. in a few seconds using ordinary telephone
circuits |

Japanese
women turn to mobile communications
According
to a survey conducted by the Foundation for Multimedia Communication,
more Japanese women are using mobile communications. Of the
1,900 consumers surveyed, 47% use some sort of mobile communications
of some sort for personal e-mails, and almost 1/3 of mobile
e-mail users are women, a 13% increase from last year. |

KDD, AND IDO close to merger
DDI,
KDD, and IDO are in negotiations to merge by October 2000. The
new company DDI Inc. will have annual revenues exceeding $19.7
billion dollars and cover international telecommunications,
domestic long distance, and mobile communications. |

Sony
plans to establish an Internet bank in 2001. The bank will target
individual consumers and will invest
received funds initially in government bonds and corporate debts
with high-credit ratings. |

has developed a high-speed technology for searching digital
images. NEC claims that its system can find an image from 24
hours worth of compressed video data in one second. The system
is now being promoted by NEC as the basis for the MPEG-7 standard |

Researches develop powerful DNA chip
Researchers
at Kyushu University and the University of Tsukaba have developed
a new type of DNA chip that offers 1,000x the performance of
current chips. The new chip checks the genome of patients to
determine their genetic makeup. |

University to set up gene therapy venture
Researchers
at Osaka together with pharmaceutical firms and VC funds, plan
to set up a gene therapy
company. The new company, the first of its kind in Japan, will
develop capsules that will be &inserted
into human bodies. These capsules will hold a gene developed
by Osaka University to treat various
diseases. |
